North Korea (Korean: 조선 Chosŏn), officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea or DPRK (조선민주주의인민공화국, Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk) is the world's most isolated country and has usually been referred to as the "Hermit Kingdom". It's located in East Asia on the Korean Peninsula, which has been divided between North and South Korea since the 1950s. One of the few remaining communist states in the world and the last frontier of the Cold War, North Korean society is dominated and run by a totalitarian government that maintains a tight grip over its people. The government (most specifically the leader) is in firm control of just about everything in the country.
